				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Most people have experienced the strange gap between what they know and what their body does.</p>
<p>You know the presentation is not dangerous, but your heart races and your mind goes blank. You know your partner is not your father, but the moment their voice changes, you become quiet. You know you are allowed to say no, but somehow the word will not come. You know the accident happened years ago, yet your body responds as though something is about to happen again.</p>
<p>You understand exactly where the reaction came from. You may have talked about the past, made sense of it, recognised the trigger, challenged the beliefs that developed around it and reminded yourself many times that the present is different.</p>
<p>And still the response happens.</p>
<p>We often describe this as irrational, but it is not irrational. The difficulty is that we are trying to understand the behaviour of the nervous system using the logic of the conscious mind.</p>
<p>The mind and the nervous system do not organise information in the same way.</p>
<p>The mind works with meaning, explanation, memory, intention and conscious knowledge. It looks backwards and forwards, compares situations and draws conclusions. It understands that something happened twenty years ago, recognises that one person is not another, and knows that circumstances have changed.</p>
<p>The mind can say, <em>That was then. This is now. I am an adult. I have choices. This person is not going to hurt me. I understand why I react this way.</em></p>
<p>All of that can be completely true.</p>
<p>Yet the nervous system continues to respond because something remains unresolved.</p>
<p>That does not mean it has failed to understand that the present is different. It means we have been assuming that the information that matters most to the mind is also the information the nervous system requires.</p>
<p>The nervous system is organised around protection. When it detects threat, it recruits responses intended to influence what happens next. Depending on the circumstances, that might mean turning away, creating distance, blocking, protesting, pushing away, escaping, becoming still or using whatever defensive response is available.</p>
<p>From that perspective, its logic is different.</p>
<p>The relevant questions are not simply: <em>What happened? Is it over? Do I understand it now?</em></p>
<p>They are: <em>What kind of threat was this? What did I need to do? Was I able to do it? If not, what prevented me? And is that protective response available to me now?</em></p>
<p>This is what I mean by <strong>nervous system logic</strong>.</p>
<p>Symptoms, behaviours, emotions and bodily responses are not random. They make sense when we understand what threat the nervous system detected, what defensive response it recruited, what prevented that response from succeeding or completing, and what the system continues to organise around as a consequence.</p>
<p>Consider someone who grew up with a frightening and controlling father. As an adult, she has a kind and supportive partner. She knows he is not violent. She trusts him. She could easily list the many ways in which he is different from her father.</p>
<p>Then one evening he becomes frustrated. His tone changes.</p>
<p>Almost immediately, she goes quiet. She agrees with him. She cannot find the words she wanted to say. She feels physically unable to disagree.</p>
<p>Later she looks back and wonders, <em>Why did I do that? I know he isn&#8217;t my father.</em></p>
<p>From the logic of the mind, her response makes very little sense.</p>
<p>But suppose that, as a child, protesting against her father made things worse. Perhaps disagreement escalated the danger. Perhaps resistance threatened a relationship she depended upon. Perhaps attempts to protect herself were repeatedly overridden.</p>
<p>Her nervous system did not learn something as simple as <em>angry men are dangerous</em>. The unfinished prediction is more specific: <em>When connection is threatened, protest is dangerous.</em> Or perhaps, <em>I cannot protect myself and remain connected.</em></p>
<p>Her nervous system is not confusing her partner with her father. It is following a pattern that once had biological logic.</p>
<p>This is where the difference between the logic of the mind and the logic of the nervous system becomes important.</p>
<p>The mind asks whether the present is different from the past.</p>
<p>The nervous system asks whether the <strong>outcome can be different</strong>.</p>
<p>Telling herself, <em>He is not my father</em>, provides information about who the person is. That information does not answer the biological question.</p>
<p>Can I protest now? Can I say no? Can I remain present while disagreeing? Can I move away? Can I establish a boundary? And what happens if I do?</p>
<p>The nervous system requires an experience that demonstrates that protection is now possible and that the expected consequence does not follow.</p>
<p>This is why intellectual understanding and biological resolution are not the same thing.</p>
<p>The mind updates through information. We hear an explanation, understand a new idea, reconsider what happened and change our interpretation.</p>
<p>The nervous system updates through experience.</p>
<p>If a defensive response was initiated but could not succeed, the fact that danger is no longer present does not provide the missing information. The nervous system needs evidence that the action itself is now available.</p>
<p>Someone who could not push away needs to discover the capacity to push. Someone who could not leave needs the experience of being able to leave. Someone whose protest was repeatedly inhibited needs to discover that protest can occur without the predicted consequence. Someone who had no authority over what happened needs to experience the return of choice.</p>
<p>The mind can know the danger is over.</p>
<p>The nervous system needs to know that the response to the danger can now succeed.</p>
<p>There is another complication. The conscious mind does not operate only through reason. It also carries social rules, expectations, learned beliefs and ideas about who we are supposed to be.</p>
<p>The mind says, <em>Don&#8217;t be rude. She&#8217;s your mother. He didn&#8217;t mean it. Don&#8217;t make a scene. You should forgive. You&#8217;re overreacting. You can&#8217;t just walk away. I should be over this by now.</em></p>
<p>Meanwhile, the nervous system is trying to do something much simpler.</p>
<p>Move. Turn away. Stop them. Create distance. Push. Leave. Protest.</p>
<p>The mind can therefore become part of what inhibits the biological response.</p>
<p>A movement begins and is stopped because it feels impolite. Anger appears and is immediately judged as unacceptable. The impulse to leave is overridden because leaving might upset someone. A boundary starts to emerge and is replaced with appeasement because maintaining the relationship feels more important than protecting the self.</p>
<p>But social rules are not the only way the mind inhibits defensive action.</p>
<p>The mind can also inhibit a defensive response for an entirely practical reason.</p>
<p>Sometimes the action the nervous system recruits cannot succeed in physical reality.</p>
<p>A person facing an oncoming car may have an immediate impulse to put out their hands and stop it, while simultaneously knowing that their hands cannot stop a moving vehicle. The defensive impulse makes biological sense. The inhibition makes logical sense.</p>
<p>Both are correct.</p>
<p>The nervous system says, <em>Stop what is coming toward me.</em></p>
<p>The mind says, <em>My hands cannot stop a car.</em></p>
<p>The action is inhibited because it cannot achieve the required outcome in physical reality. But the fact that the action could not work does not mean the defensive impulse was wrong. It means the response the nervous system recruited was unable to succeed.</p>
<p>This distinction matters because the mind is not simply obstructing the nervous system through unhelpful thoughts or social conditioning. Sometimes it is accurately recognising reality.</p>
<p>A child cannot overpower a much larger adult. A hand cannot stop a moving car. A body cannot outrun an impact that has already begun.</p>
<p>The logic of the mind is correct.</p>
<p>The logic of the nervous system is also correct.</p>
<p>They are solving different problems.</p>
<p>The nervous system is organising around what needs to happen to stop the threat. The mind is recognising what is possible within the circumstances.</p>
<p>When those two forms of logic collide, the defensive response can remain unfinished.</p>
<p>This does not make the mind the enemy. It means that conscious intention, social conditioning, predicted consequences and the constraints of physical reality can all interfere with the action the nervous system is attempting to organise.</p>
<p>The mind is often asking, <em>What should I do? What am I allowed to do? What will happen if I do it? Will it even work?</em></p>
<p>The nervous system is asking something more fundamental:</p>
<p><em>What do I need to do to protect myself?</em></p>
<p>Those answers are not always the same.</p>
<p>Once we begin looking through the lens of nervous system logic, behaviours that seem dysfunctional begin to make much more sense.</p>
<p>Going quiet is not simply poor communication. It can be the continuation of a response that once protected connection. Avoiding conflict is not simply a personality characteristic. It can reflect a history in which protest carried consequences. Feeling trapped in situations where leaving is objectively possible makes sense when there was once a situation in which escape was not available. Intense activation in an apparently safe environment reflects a prediction that has never been updated.</p>
<p>The response is not meaningless. It is information.</p>
<p>Instead of asking only, <em>How do we make this reaction stop?</em>, we can ask a different question:</p>
<p><strong>What is the nervous system trying to do?</strong></p>
<p>And then:</p>
<p><strong>What prevented it from doing that before?</strong></p>
<p>Those questions take us somewhere very different.</p>
<p>Insight still matters. Meaning matters. Understanding our history is valuable. But psychological knowing and biological knowing are not interchangeable.</p>
<p>A person can know intellectually that they are allowed to protect themselves while still losing access to protection when it matters. They can consciously believe they have choices while their nervous system continues to organise as though they do not. They can fully understand that they survived while some part of the defensive response remains unfinished.</p>
<p>This is why someone can say, <em>I know all of this already</em>, and still experience the same reaction.</p>
<p>They do know it.</p>
<p>Their nervous system is still organised around something else.</p>
<p>When trauma is understood primarily through symptoms, thoughts and emotional responses, treatment naturally tends to focus on changing those symptoms, thoughts and emotions. When we look through the lens of nervous system logic, another possibility appears.</p>
<p>The ongoing response is not simply something that needs to be regulated, managed or corrected.</p>
<p>The nervous system is continuing to organise around an interrupted defensive response, a prediction that was never updated, a protective action that remained unavailable, a boundary that could not be established, or an outcome that the system still expects.</p>
<p>That changes the work.</p>
<p>Instead of trying to convince the nervous system that it should stop reacting, we become interested in why the reaction still makes biological sense.</p>
<p>Instead of asking why the person cannot move on, we ask what has not yet finished.</p>
<p>Instead of assuming the body needs to be calmed, we ask what it is still trying to accomplish.</p>
<p>The difference between the two forms of logic can be expressed quite simply.</p>
<p><strong>The mind makes sense of what happened.</strong></p>
<p><strong>The nervous system organises around what needed to happen next.</strong></p>
<p>Sometimes those two forms of knowing arrive at the same conclusion. Sometimes they do not.</p>
<p>And when they do not, the response of the nervous system looks irrational until we understand the logic it is following.</p>
<p>That logic is not discovered by asking the nervous system to think differently. It becomes visible when we understand what it was trying to do, what stopped it, and what remains unfinished.</p>
<p>When the protective response can finally succeed, the nervous system receives different information.</p>
<p>The prediction changes.</p>
<p>The past becomes the past.</p>
<p>And agency becomes available in the present.</p>

<p data-start="1188" data-end="1286">Trauma is commonly understood as the lasting impact of something overwhelming that happened to us.</p>
<p data-start="1288" data-end="1385">The event matters. The circumstances matter. What happened before, during and afterwards matters.  But what if the event itself is not the trauma?</p>
<p data-start="1436" data-end="1520">What if trauma has more to do with what the nervous system was unable to finish?</p>
<p data-start="1522" data-end="1586">When the nervous system detects threat, it automatically organises a response.  It may turn away, move back, block, resist, push, run, fight or become still.  These responses are not random. They are organised attempts to prevent harm, protect ourselves, preserve the connection, or survive.</p>
<p data-start="1774" data-end="1841">Usually, the response does its job and the nervous system moves on.  But sometimes something prevents that from happening.</p>
<p data-start="1898" data-end="2175">We may be too young to act.<br data-start="1925" data-end="1928" /> We may be physically overpowered or trapped.<br data-start="1972" data-end="1975" /> Another defensive response may take priority.<br data-start="2020" data-end="2023" /> Protecting ourselves may carry consequences we cannot afford.<br data-start="2084" data-end="2087" /> Preserving an important relationship may matter more than protest, resistance or escape.</p>
<p data-start="2177" data-end="2195">The event may end.  But something the nervous system organised to do has not.</p>
<p data-start="2256" data-end="2406">That unfinished response can continue influencing physiology, perception, behaviour and prediction long after the original circumstances have changed.</p>
<p data-start="2408" data-end="2476">This is the central proposition of the Biological Completion Model™:</p>
<p data-start="2478" data-end="2555"><strong data-start="2478" data-end="2555">Trauma is the persistence of an unfinished biological defensive response.</strong></p>
<p data-start="2557" data-end="2726">What we later call anxiety, hypervigilance, avoidance, shutdown, reactivity, tension or other trauma-related symptoms may be expressions of that continuing organisation.</p>
<p data-start="2728" data-end="2748">The symptoms matter.  But they may not be the trauma itself.  And if that is true, it changes the question from <strong>&#8220;</strong>how do we reduce the symptoms?&#8221; or &#8220;how do we calm the nervous system?&#8221; to:</p>
<p data-start="2976" data-end="3027"><strong data-start="2976" data-end="3027">&#8220;What is this nervous system trying to do?&#8221;</strong></p>
<p data-start="3029" data-end="3084">That question is the beginning of nervous system logic.</p>

If a child develops unusual behavioural issues, we try to understand what is happening so that we can help the child. We understand that treating or masking symptoms does not resolve the underlying condition.</p>
<p data-start="467" data-end="501">So how is trauma commonly defined?</p>
<p data-start="503" data-end="531">Some define it as the event.</p>
<p data-start="533" data-end="637">Some define it as the emotional and physical response to, and lasting effects of, an overwhelming event.</p>
<p data-start="639" data-end="681">Some define it as trapped survival energy.</p>
<p data-start="683" data-end="739">Each definition directs us towards a different solution strategy.</p>
<p data-start="741" data-end="791">If trauma is the event, we focus on what happened.</p>
<p data-start="793" data-end="892">If trauma is the lasting emotional or physiological effect of the event, we focus on those effects.</p>
<p data-start="894" data-end="945">If trauma is dysregulation, we focus on regulation.</p>
<p data-start="947" data-end="1005">If trauma is trapped energy, we focus on releasing energy.</p>
<p data-start="1007" data-end="1078"><strong data-start="1007" data-end="1078">An incomplete definition directs us towards an incomplete solution.</strong></p>
<p data-start="1080" data-end="1135">We know that the same event affects people differently.</p>
<p data-start="1137" data-end="1184">Insight does not complete a defensive response.</p>
<p data-start="1186" data-end="1343">People can become highly skilled at regulating their nervous system and still experience the same triggers, anxiety, hypervigilance, avoidance or reactivity.</p>
<p data-start="1345" data-end="1379">So what is sustaining the pattern?</p>
<p data-start="1381" data-end="1454"><strong data-start="1381" data-end="1454">Living systems are organised around maintaining functional integrity.</strong></p>
<p data-start="1456" data-end="1612">A signal identifies a requirement.  Action is organised to meet that requirement.  When the action succeeds, the system no longer needs to organise around it.</p>
<p data-start="1614" data-end="1680">Thirst signals a need for water. We drink. The requirement is met.<br />
Hunger signals a need for food. We eat. The requirement is met.<br />
Threat follows the same biological logic.</p>
<p data-start="1790" data-end="1916">When the nervous system detects threat, it organises defensive action intended to prevent harm, protect us or help us survive.</p>
<p data-start="1918" data-end="2029">When that action cannot succeed or complete, the event can end while the defensive response remains unfinished.</p>
<p data-start="2031" data-end="2103">This is the definition at the centre of the Biological Completion Model:</p>
<p data-start="2105" data-end="2182"><strong data-start="2105" data-end="2182">Trauma is the persistence of an unfinished biological defensive response.</strong></p>
<p data-start="2184" data-end="2225">That definition changes what we look for.  The symptoms are not the trauma.  They are expressions of the unfinished response.</p>
<p data-start="2315" data-end="2353">And the central question changes from: “how do we reduce or manage these symptoms?” to “what is this nervous system trying to do?”</p>
<p data-start="2465" data-end="2494">We have spent decades asking,  “what happened?”</p>
<p data-start="2518" data-end="2567">This definition of trauma also requires us to ask, “what didn’t get to happen?”</p>
<p data-start="2603" data-end="2664" data-is-last-node="" data-is-only-node=""><strong>Because how we define trauma determines what we try to treat.</strong></p>
