<p data-start="201" data-end="264">The nervous system is not simply reacting to what is happening.</p>
<p data-start="266" data-end="317"><strong data-start="266" data-end="317">It is predicting what is likely to happen next.</strong></p>
<p data-start="319" data-end="508">Prediction is one of the ways a living system prepares for what is coming. It allows us to respond before a situation has fully unfolded rather than waiting until harm has already occurred.</p>
<p data-start="510" data-end="596">If a certain sound has preceded danger before, the nervous system becomes alert to that sound.</p>
<p data-start="510" data-end="596">If speaking up has led to punishment, it prepares for the consequences of speaking.</p>
<p data-start="510" data-end="596">If closeness has repeatedly ended in rejection, it begins organising before rejection occurs.</p>
<p data-start="778" data-end="888">The prediction shapes what we notice, how we interpret what is happening and how the nervous system prepares the body to respond.</p>
<p data-start="890" data-end="953">Usually, predictions are tested against experience, and updated:</p>
<p data-start="890" data-end="953">Something is expected.<br />
Something happens.<br />
The nervous system receives new information.<br />
The prediction changes.</p>
<p data-start="1070" data-end="1188">But what happens when the nervous system organises a defensive response and that response never succeeds or completes?</p>
<p data-start="1190" data-end="1208">The event can end.<br />
The circumstances can change.<br />
The conscious mind can understand that the danger belongs to the past.<br />
And yet the prediction remains.</p>
<p data-start="1346" data-end="1462">This is one reason the logic of the nervous system can appear irrational from the perspective of the conscious mind.</p>
<p data-start="1464" data-end="1478">The mind says: &#8220;This person is not my former partner.&#8221;<br />
The nervous system predicts: &#8220;If I protect myself, the same thing will happen.&#8221;</p>
<p data-start="1607" data-end="1621">The mind says: &#8220;That is only a helicopter. There is no fire.&#8221;<br />
The nervous system predicts danger because that sound has previously been associated with fire.</p>
<p data-start="72" data-end="144">Both are working from information. But the information is different.  The mind is working from the present situation.  The nervous system is working from what the previous outcome taught it to expect.</p>
<p data-start="1852" data-end="1951">A prediction does not change simply because we know, intellectually, that the present is different.  It changes when the nervous system receives biological evidence that a different outcome is possible.</p>
<p data-start="2046" data-end="2101">Until then, it continues preparing for what it expects.</p>
<p data-start="2103" data-end="2278">That preparation can appear as anxiety, hypervigilance, tension, avoidance, reactivity, shutdown or an inability to act freely in situations that resemble the original threat.</p>
<p data-start="2280" data-end="2345">These responses are often described as living in “survival mode.”  But survival mode is the consequence.</p>
<p data-start="2386" data-end="2438"><strong data-start="2386" data-end="2438">The prediction that didn’t update is the reason.</strong></p>
<p data-start="2440" data-end="2531">This also helps explain why symptom reduction and prediction update are not the same thing.</p>
<p data-start="2533" data-end="2554">We can become calmer.<br />
We can learn to regulate activation.<br />
We can understand our history.<br />
We can know that the present situation is different.<br />
All of those things can be valuable.<br />
But the nervous system is still asking a more fundamental question: &#8220;can the outcome be different this time?&#8221;</p>
<p data-start="2832" data-end="2944">If the prediction remains unchanged, the same organisation can return when the relevant conditions appear again.</p>
<p data-start="2946" data-end="3083">This is why the Biological Completion Model pays attention not only to what happened, but to what the nervous system continues to expect.</p>
<p data-start="3085" data-end="3106">The question becomes: &#8220;what prediction is organising this response?&#8221;</p>
<p data-start="3158" data-end="3200">Because sometimes the threat is long over, but<strong> </strong>the prediction is not.</p>
<p data-start="3230" data-end="3331" data-is-last-node="" data-is-only-node="">And until the nervous system receives new biological evidence, it continues to organise as if the threat still exists.</p>
